| South Africa’s Leading Newspaper Disputes Allegations of Reporting Irresponsibly on Xenophobic Violence |
On 29 May 2008 the Media Monitoring Project (MMP) and its partner, the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA), filed an official complaint with the press ombudsman Joe Thloloe and the South African Human Rights Commission against the country’s leading daily newspaper, the Daily Sun. The newspaper, which has a readership base of 4.8 million people or a quarter of the adult population in the country, has been accused of having an anti-immigrant bias that has exacerbated tensions between normally friendly ethnic groups.

| International Community Mourns the Murder of Leading Somali Journalist |
Nasteh Dahir Farah, a well-known Somali journalist, was brutally murdered in a targeted attack by two unknown gunmen on 7 June on his way home in the southern city of Kismayo. Farah had an expansive journalistic career that extended from being an international reporter to a teacher of journalism.

| UN Human Rights Council Urged to Strengthen Focus on Tunisia |
The IFEX Tunisia Monitoring Group (TMG), a coalition of 18 organisations, including WAN, that promotes freedom of expression in Tunisia, has urged the UN to increase its efforts in pushing Tunisia to abide to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, notably Article 19 during the 8th session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council held in Geneva on 9 June.

| World Association of Newspapers Campaigns for Imprisoned Eritrean Journalists |
The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has expanded its efforts in pressing for the release of imprisoned Eritrean journalists with an advertisement campaign showing the face of Dawit Isaak, one of fourteen imprisoned Eritrean journalists. WAN is encouraging newspapers worldwide to publish the free advertisement.

On 5 June, The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, Nigeria, declared the arrest and detention of Chief Ebrima Manneh illegal and ordered the Gambian authorities to immediately release him. The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) filed the suit before the regional court on behalf of Chief Manneh. The court also awarded damages in the sum of US$ 100,000 in favour of Manneh against the Gambian Government.

War correspondents and photographers have until 16 June to submit works for the Bayeux-Calvados War Correspondents Prize. The best journalistic work on a conflict and its consequences for the civil population or an event concerning the defence of press freedom and democracy will be awarded.
