| Live Broadcasting Ban Lifted in Kenya |
On 4 February, the Kenyan government lifted the month-long ban on live broadcasting ahead of court hearings officially because of an "improvement in the situation." However, Information Minister Samuel Poghisio warned the media against "inflammatory content" and confirmed the setting up of a media task force.

| Arbitrary Denials To Publish In Ethiopia |
On 30 January, CPJ protested the Ethiopian government’s denial of publishing licenses to five journalists who were released from prison last year. Award-winning publisher Serkalem Fasil, columnist Eskinder Nega, and publisher Sisay Agena have submitted applications and fulfilled all legal requirements to launch two newspapers. Yet the head of the Press Licensing and Permit Office, Fantahun Asres, notified the journalists that their applications had been denied without further explanation.

| Alerts from the Continent |
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) called on Uganda authorities to end the harassment of journalists in the country following the arrests of five journalists and editors on 28 January. All five worked at the privately-owned Daily Monitor and were charged with defaming the Inspector General of Government, Justice Faith Mwondha. The charges stemmed from the publication of articles that implicated her in a salary scam. They were released from jail on bail pending their trial.
