The draft Somali Media Law has been assessed by international observers as not being a sufficient first step in securing a freer media in Somalia. The Transitional Federal Parliament of the Somali Republic
(TFP) approved the draft Law on 1 December 2007 after a preliminary reading.

| Statistics Indicate Media in West Africa Experienced Improved Conditions |
While acknowledging the inherent limits of statistics, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) reports that fewer press freedom violations occurred in the sub-region, comprised of 16 countries, in 2007. In 2006, there were 168 reported incidences of press freedom violations compared to 142 over the past year.

Maurice Kayombo, journalist at Les Grands Enjeux, a monthly investigative magazine, has been detained for the past week in a holding cell of the Kinshasa/Gombe High Court, in the Democratic Repbulic of Congo after being accused with blackmail and “disparaging an official” on 9
January 2008. His arrest stems from a complaint made by the secretary-general of the Mining Ministry, Christophe Kaninio. According to Journaliste en Danger (JED), his arrest is inextricably linked to allegations that the paper, which has ties to political and financial interests in Katanga, made of mismanagement of the mining
sector in the country.
