The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has awarded Ali Djerri, managing director of the Alger -based independent El-Khabar, its international journalism award. In recent months, Djerri has come under increasing attack by the Algerian authorities for his newspapers reporting.

| Press Offences No Longer Punishable by Prison in Togo |
On 24 August, the Togolese National Assembly adopted a draft law amending the countrys current press and communications law. The law’s major advance is the abolishing of prison sentences for press offences such as defamation and insult. Heavy fines of up to five million CFA francs, (approximately US$9,200) remain.
