| Ethiopia: Local Languages, New Markets |
The Amharic language newspaper, "The Monitor" - an offspring of the English language "The Daily Monitor" - was launched six months ago into a very competitive market. It hopes to compete by offering international and regional news, reaching out to the youth market, and offering weekend supplements. The launch of an Amharic-language newspaper is an ambitious move, as there are more than 80 publications printed in the language.

As the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) ended in Geneva last week, press freedom organisations active at the summit focused attention on Tunisia, saying the second phase of the WSIS should not be held there because of the country’s serious human rights abuses.

| Press Freedom Improves in Democratic Republic of Congo |
Press-freedom conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) improved in 2003, with fewer journalists detained and none imprisoned by year’s end, concludes a new report released by Journaliste en danger. JED presented its annual report on 9 December at a press conference in Kinshasa, which was attended by more than 100 people, including government officials, diplomats, journalists, and a representative from President Joseph Kabila’s office.

A new publication has been launched in Benin. The "d’Adjinakou" newspaper was launched on 28 November, and currently has a staff of around 20 well experienced journalists, with both national and international reporting experience.

| "National GUARDIAN" Newspaper Launched in Ghana |
The "National GUARDIAN" newspaper has been launched in Ghana by the Media Guard publishing company. The general interest newspaper will cover politics, business, the economy and sports, and will also offer human interest stories. The newspaper will appear three times a week, and will be a minimum of 16-pages.

| All Expense Paid Fellowships to Oxford University Offered by Reuters Foundation |
The Reuters Foundation is accepting applications for their fellowship programme for mid-career journalists at Green College, Oxford. The fellowships run for three or six months, and all travel costs, living expenses and university fees are covered. Journalists who work full-time for a print, broadcast or on-line media organisation, from any country, may apply.
