Chadian Independent Newspapers Create a United Issue
The independent press in Chad has coalesced to proactively respond to the state of emergency proclaimed on 15 February and the subsequent media law amendments promulgated on 20 February. The independent media, as reported by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), initially halted publication in protest of the new law issued by decree that increased the maximum penalty for “false news” and defamation.

Newspapers Respond to Changing Landscape of Johannesburg
One of South Africa’s media giants Caxton will launch another community newspaper, The Comaro Chronicle, in Southern Johannesburg on 9 April to better serve the changing demographics of the region. Like the rest of the city, the southern suburbs are expanding while to an extent continuing to embrace the contrasts and paradoxes ubiquitous to the city at large. Caxton’s move will aid in sustaining the vital connections with those moving to the emergent outlying areas of the city centre via the media.

A Moroccan Daily for Free
au fait is the first free daily to be launched in Morocco, which already has several free weeklies. With a circulation of 10,000 copies, this newspaper is distributed from Monday to Friday by a team of fourteen peddlers in Casablanca and three in Rabat since 1 March 2007, it will soon be available in Marrakech.

Ghana: New Weekly Thinks Local, Aims High
In April this year a new regional weekly appeared on newsstands in Ghana. Despite initial financial losses and ongoing challenges to attract new advertisers, the man behind The Effia Kwesimintsim Observer is hopeful that these obstacles can be overcome. Management: Liberians study keys to Uganda newspaper survival

When Liberian newspaper executives saw the printing press of Ugandas biggest newspaper, they realized it looked familiar. Thats because the press was the same kind Liberias largest newspaper had owned before war and looting destroyed it.

It made me realize that if we had not lost everything for so long, wed probably be in good condition now, said Sando Moore, who was on the staff of The Observer, which owned that press. The Observer was selling more than 10,000 copies a day when its press was destroyed and its building burned to the ground. Now the highest-selling Liberian daily sells barely 1,000 copies.

Ethiopia: Local Languages, New Markets
The Amharic language newspaper, "The Monitor" - an offspring of the English language "The Daily Monitor" - was launched six months ago into a very competitive market. It hopes to compete by offering international and regional news, reaching out to the youth market, and offering weekend supplements. The launch of an Amharic-language newspaper is an ambitious move, as there are more than 80 publications printed in the language.
