There are many opportunities in the print business to exploit the capabilities of the web to enhance the reader/advertiser/publisher affiliation, according to the report, "Internet Strategies for Newspapers Revisited."
WAN notes that many studies show that e-mail is the most common use of the Internet. E-mail therefore can be an opportunity for newspapers publishers to market themselves. E-mails can be used as breaking news services (for match results, for example) and customised alerts. Newspapers also market lists of subscribers.
E-mails can also add value to print advertising services by enabling readers to request e-mailed details about advertisements that have appeared in the newspapers.
Newspapers can also organize online events. Online chats are a common newspaper tool, where readers can meet with leading business personalities or politicians, for example. These services could be extented to online consulation clinics, fashion tips or advices about hobbies.
As the report shows, Internet is not a threat to circulation: it is an opportunity to enhance the reader relationships and it adds value to the print package.
