Albert Mbida, a representative of the Ministery of Communication, complained that "ethics were offended and thrown in the dustbin of the Ministry." Defamation, false news, slander and intimidation among colleagues are the main troubles which undermine media in Cameroon, he said, citing the absence of training, the uncertainty of working conditions, and the absence of organisation and adequate sanctions as the reasons for the problems.
His conclusions were not appreciated by journalists attending the event who called his position interventionism. For Suzanne Kala Lobe, columnist for the private-owned paper La Nouvelle Expression and for radio station Equinoxe, his position conveys "the fear of authorities" that they cannot control the media. The journalist would prefer a consensus and dialogue to reconcile the press with itself and with the Ministry of Communication supervision.
Clestin Bedziggui, an opposition politician, said the Cameroonian media is the microcosm of the State, where corruption, non-compliance with the laws and distortion in the distribution of resources are set up as social standards. He admitted that politicians always try to control the media.
It is up to journalists to resist outside forces and negative drives which try to corrupt them and to compromise them in the exercise of their function.
