Senior West African editors and other newsroom leaders are invited to a two-day technical training workshop aimed at strengthening their understanding of the ethical, socio-economic and scientific contexts of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
The workshop, facilitated by the Journalists Against AIDS network and underwritten by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, will take place at the Iworo Whispering Palms Resort, near Badagry, in Lagos State, Nigeria, from 15 to 17 December.
The workshop is designed to equip regional media’s "final gatekeepers" with the necessary technical knowledge to ensure that HIV/Aids reporting is accurate, relevant, and properly researched and contextualized.
Only senior editors, editor-in-chiefs, senior managers and directors are eligible for the workshop. Applicants are, however, welcome from any major regional newspaper, magazine, radio or television station, news agency and online news services.
Participants will explore the latest scientific trends and explanations of HIV/Aids, debate the ethics surrounding media coverage of the pandemic, and review the socio-economic impact of the disease. The workshop will also seek to show participants techniques for developing fresh approaches to covering the pandemic.
