Ad campaign for Zimbabwean newspaper wins top award at Cannes ad festival
The Zimbabwean, a newspaper serving Zimbabweans living in the U.K. and Southern Africa, won the top award in the outdoor category at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. The winning ad used the now worthless Zimbabwean banknotes as a backdrop. It is meant to draw attention to the devaluation of the banknotes and crisis the country is facing under Mugabe. The other goal is to attract funding for the newspaper The Zimbabwean, which faces a 55 % “luxury import” tax to get copies into Zimbabwe, so it must be subsidized in order to get more copies into the hands of locals. The ad campaign is aimed to raise sales and awareness outside the country. Wilf Mbanga, the founder, editor and publisher of The Zimbabwean, lives in Britain after being forced to leave Zimbabwe when he was branded an enemy of the people.
