French Foreign Minister encourages a freer press in Zimbabwe
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner on June 25 reminded Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of the need to respect human rights and have a free media. Tsvanigarai was in Paris as part of a multi-country tour to gather support for the “new” Zimbabwe. "The monopoly of the state in the media is no longer tenable," Kouchner said, urging the creation of independent newspapers, radio stations and televisions. Tsvangirai responded that Kouchner’s concern is “legitimate,” and said that the media is going to “reopen.” Source: Agence France-Presse (AFP)
