Journalists in the developing world who show great courage and commitment to reporting on controversial issues are encouraged to apply for the 2009 Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism. The deadline to apply is 22 June.
Two annual prizes of US$5,000 each are awarded, one to a local journalist in developing country and the other for a freelance journalist covering international news.
To apply, interested journalists must submit an entry form and up to three original articles published between 1 March 2008 and 31 May 2009. Applicants must also submit a CV and a statement explaining their work. All works must be submitted with an English translation.
The awards are given in honor of Schork, an American freelance journalist killed in a military ambush while on assignment for Reuters in May 2000, in Sierra Leone.
