In the run up to the Beijing Olympic Games the Chinese government introduced a set of more lax regulations for foreign and Chinese national journalists to report. Foreign journalists were granted more feasibility to travel around the country and all reporters were free to interview anyone who was willing. However, these regulations, new to the country, are set to expire on 17 October.
The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) is therefore calling on the Chinese government to extend the relaxation of its media regulations beyond the expiry date. WAN is also reissuing its call on the government to abide to the promises it had pledged regarding freedom of expression in its bid for hosting the Games.
As the Chinese government continues to harass and imprison journalists, WAN has embarked on a campaign to pressure the government to change its course. To find out more information please visit: http://www.wan-press.org/china
