Recognizing the bravery of women journalists, the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Courage in Journalism Awards attempt to shine light on the lack of press freedom around the world. Courage Award winners have suffered harassment, physical attacks, rape, and death threats because they report stories concerning government malfeasance, genocide, war, human rights violations and crimes against humanity. Past recipients include journalists such as Anna Politkovskaya. This year’s awards will be presented at ceremonies in New York on 23 October and in Los Angeles on 30 October.
