The government of Angola announced recently that a “National Journalism Prize” will be awarded annually in May, beginning in 2008.
The prize will be awarded to journalists in four categories: radio, television, print, and photojournalism. Winners will receive a cash prize, a diploma, and other as-of-yet unnamed incentives.
The award is open to journalists and scholars in social communications whose work has been published in the Angolan news media. Candidates may apply for the award as individuals or as a collective, and need not be citizens of Angola.
The award aims to promote quality journalism nationwide, and its fixed annual date of 3 May is intended to celebrate World Press Freedom Day.
The National Journalism Prize is being instituted by the Ministry of Social Communication, and funded by the state budget.
