African freelance cameramen and camerawomen are encouraged to submit their best work for the 2006 Rory Peck Awards. The award has three categories: coverage of humanitarian crises, breaking news and in-depth features. The awards is the only of its kind to celebrate the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in TV news, current affairs and features.
The awards are named for freelance journalist Rory Peck, who was killed in 1993 while filming a coup attempt in Moscow. The trust established in his name created some of the first guidelines and protections for freelancers killed in the line of duty.

* entries not in English must be accompanied by a detailed and accurate storyline or dopesheet in English
