New title launched in Morocco
On 10 November 2005, the French-language daily “Maroc Soir” was launched by Maroc Soir Ltd. The media house also publishes “Le Matin du Sahara”, “Assahraa Al-Maghrebia”, “La Manăna”, and the English-language website Morocco Times. According to Othman el Omeir, the new president of the press group, publishing Maroc Soir is a move that fills an obvious gap. “It is not logical that the group is called by the name of an unpublished newspaper.” He also said that “Morocco needs another newspaper in French, destined for the new generations . . . the generation of the internet and the digital world.” Maroc Soir will employ 20 editorial and five non-editorial staff. In the first stage, the Casablanca-based daily will be distributed only in large urban centres, including Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech. The new title will appear five days a week.
