African media outlets which show excellence in coverage will be eligible for three new awards that have been launched by the Kenya-based Africa Free Media Foundation (AFMF), and the US-based World Free Press Institute (WFPI). The AFMF/WFPI Trophy for Impartial Coverage will be presented to media outlets which exhibit impartiality in covering war, conflict, election and politically motivated trials. The award will have three categories; one for print, another for broadcast and one for electronic media, including the Internet. Each prize has a cash value of USD1,000.
The deadline for submission from media/freedom of expression organizations will be 30 September 2006. The African Free Media Foundation (formerly known as the Network for the Defence of Independent Media in Africa, NDIMA) is a pan-African freedom of expression and human rights NGO representing local and international media groups.
