African print journalists are eligible to apply for the 2005 Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship programme. Approximately ten fellows from all over the world will be selected to spend five months working with an American newspaper. The fellowship covers all costs of programme-related international and domestic U.S. travel, health insurance and provides a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses. The stipend is not sufficient to provide support for spouses or other dependents.
The programme begins in March with a two-week orientation seminar in Washington designed to prepare the fellows for the challenges of living and working in the United States. A major component of the seminar is a six-day course in American journalism. At the middle of the program, fellows and staff come together at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida for seminars focused on writing, editing and coaching. A final seminar in Washington reunites the fellows so that they may compare and evaluate their experiences and discuss their impressions of the American media. Fellows return to their home countries in early September.
In recent years, the following publications have hosted fellows: The Boston Globe, Denver Rocky Mountain News, The Kansas City Star, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Petersburg Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post.
