A book that honours African women in the media has been released by Panos West Africa (L’institut Panos de l’Afrique de l’Ouest). "Femmes africaines dans les médias : Portraits de journalistes et de cinéastes africaines offers a collection of case studies of female professionals who have made a difference on the media scene in Africa. The publication hopes to raise the profile of these professionals, often well known in Africa, beyond the borders of the continent. Among the media professionals profiled are: Adrienne Diop, Annette MBaye d’Erneville, Fatim Sidibé, Haoua Abdou Hambally, Koumbo Singa Gali Sy, Madeleine Mukamabano, Makaro Diaby Camara, Mariama Keïta, Régina Nacro and Valérie Kaboré.
All have overcome stereotypes about the role of women in the media, and have, in their own way, contributed to democracy building and development on the African continent. This collection also reveals the changing role and responsibilities of women in the print and audiovisual journalism and cinema since the 1970s. The book, which was co-written by Chaïbou Dan-Inna, Boubacar Boris DIOP and Vieux Savané, is available on http://www.panos-ao.org
