World Press Freedom Day: WAN offers free material for your newspaper

3 May marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of principles drawn up by African journalists on 3 May 1991, calling for a free, independent and pluralistic media on the continent and throughout the world. In 1993 this day was declared World Press Freedom Day. As a way of commemorating this important day, your newspaper is encouraged to publish materials the World Association of Newspapers has compiled for you.

This year WANs World Press Freedom Day campaign is called: Impunity Getting Away with Murder. More than 500 journalists have been killed in the past decade. In 8 out of 10 cases, the killers walk free. Dont let them get away with murder! Join WAN to deliver this important message to your readers.

You can publish in your newspaper:
-  Cartoons by the French cartoonist Michel Cambon on the theme of impunity
-  Photographs of violations against journalists offered by major news agencies
-  Print advertisements, contributed by advertising agencies worldwide on the theme of impunity
-  Case studies of unsolved cases of murdered journalists in Burkina Faso, Belarus, Canada, Indonesia, the Philippines, Serbia and Sierra Leone
-  Infographics showing where in the world journalists were killed in 2004, and where they are being held in prison

Among the articles offered to your newspaper for publication: "I Pack a Pistol": Over 15 journalists have been killed in the Philippines since January 2004. Jose Torres, Jr, senior editor of abs-cbnNEWS.com, provides a personal overview of the dangers of being a journalist in his country.

"The James Miller Story": John Sweeney, a BBC reporter, remembers his friend and colleague James Miller, perhaps the best television documentary maker of his generation, who was shot dead while shining a flashlight on a white flag and shouting We are British journalists as he and two colleagues approached an Israeli armoured vehicle.

To kill a meddling journalist: why not? -- Its risk free. Rodney Pinder, Director of the International News Safety Institute, examines why the culture of impunity exists, and what is being done to combat it.

Participate in WANs campaign to raise awareness about impunity for the murderers of journalists. Use some or all of our material in your publication on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day.
