The International Press Institute (IPI) will hold its 54th General Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, from 21 to 24 May 2005. IPI is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists. The four-day event will address ways of improving the practice of journalism and safeguarding the freedom of the press as well as issues that will promote, develop and entrench the democratic culture. Sessions focusing on African topics include: Pluralism and Democracy - The African Experience", "Africa’s Development - Attracting Investment", "Reporting on Africa", "Press Freedom Issues/Africa".
Among the speakers are: the Aga Khan, spiritual leader and imam of the Ismaili Muslims, who has devoted substantial resources to development projects in East Africa; Wangari Maathai, Kenyan ecologist and 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Wole Soyinka, Nigerian writer, political activist and 1986 Nobel Laureate in Literature. Other speakers include Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya; Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and Wiseman Nkuhlu, Chairman of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Secretariat.
