The Senegalese press scene saw the arrival of a newcomer on 20 October when the first issue of the French language Assawha bimonthly was published. Assawha has been on sale in Senegal since 1992, but this is the first time the Arabic language paper has been published in French.
According to the newspaper management, the decision to start publishing the newspaper in French was a response to the high number of requests from Senegalese people who want to learn more about Islam but do not read Arabic.
Besides religious questions, Assawha deals with general and cultural news, however, always from a religious point of view. In the French version of the paper there will be a section entitled Knowing Your Religion Better, which aims at giving a Islamic view point on questions concerning the every day life of the Senegalese readers.
