Launch of scholarship for South African journalists

A new scholarship has been established for South African photographers. The Edward Ruiz scholarship will provide a ZAR 20, 000 (US$3,120) grant as well as mentoring to two aspiring photographers.

Winners will also have the chance to produce documentary work for exhibition and possible publication. Edward Ruiz was born in the United States but eventually settled in South Africa. He photographed aspects of South African life. Ruiz died in late 2003 in a drowning accident off the coast of Cape Town. Anglo Ashante and the Market Photography Workshop (MPW) are co-sponsoring the scholarship.
