On 18 June, the Media Foundation for West Africa and Media Rights Agenda, two press freedom organisations in West Africa, became the newest members of IFEX, the International Freedom of Expression Exchange. A total of 8 new members were admitted into the IFEX community at the umbrella organisations General Meeting, held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 14 to 18 June.
In 1993, the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) and West African Journalists Association were the first African free expression organisations to join IFEX. They were joined by Free Expression Ghana and IJC Nigeria in 1997.
Luckson Chipare, regional director of MISA, replaces Ann Cooper, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, as IFEXs Convenor.
IFEX makes up the worlds largest network of press freedom and free expression groups in the world, with more than 60 members globally.
