An award recognising journalists from around the world that have made outstanding contributions in promoting democracy, has been launched in the United Kingdom. The Speaker Abbot Award, which is accompanied by a cash prize of 1,000 (Approx. EUR 1,500), was established by the House of Commons’ Parliamentary Press Gallery to recognise media workers who have suffered for the caused of democracy. In addition to a cash prize, the winner will be invited to London to attend a ceremony at the House of Commons on 7 April 2004.
