South and East African junior journalists interested in learning use of the Internet and other computer tools to improve their writing, can sign up for a basic Computer-Aided Reporting & Research course with South Africa’s Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), taking place from 19-23 July. A very limited number of scholarships are available for candidates from small media outlets. The five-day practical training course will explore elementary skills for managing information on computers that use the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Participants will also be taught use of spreadsheet and database programs to improve their analysis of information, and management of statistics. The course will include pointers on accessing free online tutorials for further study, including self-teaching packages. The course fee is 4250 Rand, (approx 500), and includes lunch and refreshments.
