Human Rights Watch is accepting applications from media professionals for their Hellman/Hammett grants, which range from US$1,000 to US$10,000.The grants are awarded to writers world-wide who have been victims of political persecution and are in financial need. OF the 15 writers who received the grant in 2003, seven came from Africa. They are Njaru Philip (Cameroon), Nji Renatus Che (Cameroon),Khaled Abdu (Eritrea), Aaron Berhane (Eritrea), Lubaba Said (Ethiopia), Tom Kamara (Liberia), Chris Abani (Nigeria). The grants are awarded each spring after the nominations have been reviewed by a seven-member selection committee composed of authors, editors, and journalists who have a long-standing interest in free expression issues. Applications should include biographical information about the nominee, a list of the nominee’s published writing, a statement about the political persecution suffered, a statement of need.
