Who We Are / Mission:
RAP 21 is an electronic network for the African press that exists to facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas and the latest information about the business of newspapers, issues related to press freedom and career development opportunities. Through its website and electronic newsletter, RAP 21 provides a forum for discussion between newspaper executives and editors, journalists and other media practitioners spanning the continent.
History:
RAP 21 was launched by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) together with the Union of Publishers in Central Africa (UEPAC) in September 2000. With the help of funding from the Ottaway Foundation, RAP 21 has built up a network in over 40 countries throughout Africa, including newspapers, media associations, newspaper executives and journalists.
RAP 21 is currently supported by the leading Swedish press group Stampen.
Objectives:
To consolidate, support and protect independent media in Africa, all while helping to develop media pluralism throughout the continent
To develop newspaper management and commercial skills through information-sharing and consulting
To supply information on new technologies in the industry
To enable journalists to develop commercial strategies of newspapers
To advise on the formation and development of media associations to build African media communities
To support journalists under threat due to their professional activities
To advance press freedom throughout the continent
